Highlights and Happenings from Ms. Smith
It may have been a short week, but it was certainly packed with fun, learning, field trips, and special activities! As we head into the final week of the school year, it is wonderful to see students continuing to make memories and enjoy time together. Thank you for your continued support in helping make these opportunities possible for our students.
As summer approaches, I also want to encourage families to begin thinking about ways to keep learning going throughout the summer break. Even just 20 minutes of reading each day, independently or together as a family, can make a tremendous difference in preventing summer learning loss. Reading does not always have to look traditional either! Listening to audiobooks in the car, visiting the library, reading recipes, comics, menus, maps, or even playing word games together are all great ways to build vocabulary and strengthen literacy skills.
Practicing math facts and fluency over the summer is also incredibly important. Simple, everyday activities can help students continue building math skills in fun and meaningful ways. Cooking together, measuring ingredients, shopping and budgeting, counting change, telling time, building with LEGOs, or playing card and board games are all wonderful opportunities to practice math naturally at home.
Lastly, summer outings and family experiences also play an important role in learning. Trips to parks, museums, zoos, beaches, campsites, farmers markets, or even exploring new places around town help build background knowledge, conversation skills, and vocabulary that support future learning. Some of the best learning opportunities happen through everyday experiences and time spent together!
4th Grade Recognition
This event will be held in the Wacousta Gymnasium and begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. Families should park in the drop-off parking lot and enter through the gymnasium doors. Families, please find a seat in the gym. Students need to report to their classrooms at 5:40 p.m. Attire for students is casual, they will be given their class t-shirts to wear when they arrive in the classroom.
Summer Reading from our Reading Interventionist Kelly Nevison
Experts have shown that children who are not actively engaged in reading activities during the summer can lose 3-6 months of learning. Click on the following link to read more about how you can help your child avoid the “summer slide.” Summer Reading Newsletter.
