About Wacousta Elementary School

Located in the heart of mid-Michigan, Wacousta Elementary proudly serves families from the village of Wacousta through the northern area of Grand Ledge, along the I-96 corridor. As part of Grand Ledge Public Schools, we serve approximately 470 students in grades kindergarten through fourth.

In 2024, we opened our doors to our brand-new school building, designed to support modern learning while preserving the open-concept style that has long made Wacousta special. Grade-level neighborhoods foster connection, collaboration, and a strong sense of community among our students and staff.

Our dedicated team of teachers and support staff work together to create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where students thrive academically and socially. In addition to core instruction in math, literacy, social studies, and science, students enjoy a well-rounded educational experience through weekly art, music, and physical education classes. Our expansive campus and playgrounds provide ample space for exploration, play, and outdoor learning.

Wacousta is led by Principal Allyson Smith, who joined the school in 2025. Ms. Smith brings years of experience as a classroom teacher, building administrator, and district-level Director of Curriculum. She is passionate about instructional excellence and helping every child reach their full potential. As a leader, she values strong communication and collaboration with staff, students, and families.

We are proud of our strong school spirit, supportive families, and a staff that goes above and beyond to make each child feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether you’re a new family joining us or a longtime member of our school community, you’ll find Wacousta to be a place where every student is recognized and celebrated for their unique gifts and talents.
