PROCESS & NOMINATION FRAMEWORK


I.   Program Overview

Purpose & General Objective

The objective of this program is to:

            • Honor active-duty military members and military veterans who demonstrate exceptional service, leadership, and commitment within the community.

Why This Is Valuable for Community Engagement & Inclusion

This initiative supports:

            • Community Pride & Unity
              Public recognition fosters goodwill between the GLPS and the broader community.

            • Student Learning & Awareness
              GLPS families and employees gain exposure to civic responsibility, leadership, and service.

            • Inclusive Recognition
              Military-connected families are part of the GLPS community, recognizing their contributions promotes belonging and representation.

            • Veteran & Military Family Support
              Many veterans and active-duty families face unique transitions and challenges. Recognition reinforces that GLPS values their contributions.


 II.  Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Nominees

Nominees must:

            • Be an active-duty service member, National Guard, Reservist, or military veteran.

            • Reside in the district OR have demonstrated service to the district (e.g., volunteerism, mentorship, partnerships, support of school programs).

            • Individuals currently under investigation for or convicted of misconduct within their service or as a civilian may be considered ineligible.

III. Nomination Process

Nomination Period

            • Open annually (e.g., September 1 – October 1).

            • Clearly published on the GLPS website and shared via:

              • District newsletter

              • Building newsletters

              • PTA/PTO/PTIA communications

              • Press release OR District communication 

Who May Nominate

            • Children of the Nominee

            • Siblings of the Nominee

            • Parents/Guardians of the Nominee

            • Family Member of the Nominee

            • Colleague

            • Organization Representative

            • Community Member

            • Local Organization

Nomination Process


 IV. Selection Process

Step 1: Administrative Review (October)

Conducted by:

          • DEI Committee

          • Superintendent or designee

Goal/Purpose:

        • Confirm eligibility

        • Ensure completeness

Step 2: DEI Committee Recommendation

        • Committee recommends one staff member and one community member to the board for recognition.

        • If there is not a qualified candidate in one of those categories, then the committee will recommend two from the other category

        • Selected honorees and their nominators will be notified by the end of October.


V. Recognition Structure

Recognition Event 

        • First November school board meeting – awardee(s) are invited to attend

Recognition Elements

        • Framed certificate

        • Public resolution adopted by board

        • Press release OR District communication


VI. Program Review & Evaluation

DEI Committee Annual Review (December)

        • Number of nominations received

        • Community feedback

        • Student/Family engagement impact

The Board May:

        • Adjust criteria

        • Expand to multiple awards 

        • Create rotating categories
