Sandee!
In 2021, Grand Ledge Public Schools placedIn 2021, Grand Ledge Public Schools placed a facility dog in every building. Sandee is stationed at Wacousta Elementary School for the foreseeable future. He is a 4 year old standard poodle and has had extensive training for his job. This is his 3rd year in our building.

What is a facility dog? Facility dogs are working dogs that have been trained to help multiple people in a facility like a hospital, nursing home or school. Facility dogs are like therapy dogs except instead of traveling to different locations, they work in the same place every day.

What does Sandee do at school? Sandee is available to staff and students who wish to interact with him in different ways such as reading, practicing math facts, or just cuddling and spending time. Sandee can also be utilized for PT exercises, breaks, crisis intervention, communication, and friendship building among many other things.

Sandee is stationed in Mr. Sewick’s class this year and is available for all staff for classroom and individual visits.

We will be sharing more information about Sandee and his days at school in our weekly newsletters. If you have any questions or concerns about Sandee or the Facility Dog Program you may reach out to Principal Groves (grovesc@glcomets.net) and/or Sara Taylor (taylors@glcomets.net).

Notes from the Office

Count Day - Wednesday, October 4th!

We must be able to account for every student on count day.  If your student will be absent next Wednesday, October 4th, please call the office or send an email to identify the reason for the students absence.  Phone: 925-5940 or you may email (Cindy Zerbe zerbec@glcomets.net and Deb Nichols nicholsd@glcomets.net) with the information.  Thank you for your cooperation.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL INFORMATION

School Arrival:  Students may not be dropped off prior to 8:40 a.m. since we do not have supervision available. If your student will be getting breakfast it is important that they arrive at the drop off time and go directly to the cafeteria.  Arriving late, makes them late for class start time at 9:00.

School Dismissal:  School ends at 3:55 p.m.  All students should be picked up no later than 4:05 p.m. If you are picking up your child at the end of the day and want to meet them at parent pick up, please do not get in the parent pick up line.  We ask that you park in a parking spot and walk to meet your child.  ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT GO PAST THE CONES TO COLLECT YOUR CHILD.  WE HAVE ADULT SUPERVISION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE STUDENTS.  If you remain in your vehicle, please continue to move up in line and we'll get your student(s) to you. ~Thank you very much for your cooperation!

Half-day dismissal:  Is at 12:10 p.m.

Late Arrivals:  If you know your child is going to be arriving late, please call or email the school office to let us know.  It is also helpful to let us know if they need a school lunch and which option they'd prefer.  We'll make sure to get that ordered for them.

Early Pick-Up:  If you are planning to pick-up your child early please call the school office no later than 2:30 p.m.  We distribute the pick-up list to teachers after this time.

Absences:  If your student will be absent or becomes ill and cannot attend school, please call the office and let us know your students name, teacher, reason for absence and symptoms.  Thank you for your cooperation.

MEDICATION

All medication needs to be brought to school by a parent/guardian.  This includes all over the counter medication (cough drops, Tylenol, etc) as well.  You will find medication documents at this link: medication and health information Click on School Health Information and Forms.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Due to the number of life-threatening allergies we have in our building, we respectfully request that you do not send in any type of food for birthday treats.  Mr. Groves celebrates each child by announcing their name during the morning announcements and he personally presents them with a birthday pencil.

If you so choose, you are welcome to bring in a non-edible treat for your child's classmates but they may not include any type of gum or candy.  Some parents choose to send in something small like a pencil or stickers, but that is up to each family.  It is definitely your choice and we understand that not all families are able to do something like this.

We also request that you do not send birthday invitations to school.  If you would like an address list, we will have School Directories available in the near future for $1.00.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Still time to learn about Destination Imagination and join a team!

Be creative, study science, be artistic, and understand how things work – all while making friends and having fun by joining Destination Imagination!

DI is a STEAM-based, competitive extracurricular activity that promotes creativity and teamwork for students in grades 3 through high school. Early learning opportunities are also available for K-2 students, and we have an interested team that needs more members.

Challenges are in the technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational, engineering and service learning categories. Click this link for more details about this year’s exciting challenges!

Teams pick a challenge to tackle, work on it at weekly practices, try their hand at instant challenges and then showcase their teamwork and solutions at a regional tournament.

A team forming meeting is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Oct. 5 at Delta Center. Please contact Jennifer Pakkala, Clever Comets Coordinator, at pakkala@comcast.net to get on the email list or for answers to your questions, and follow us on Facebook!

Holiday Wishes is back this year!  We took 2 years off due to COVID.  Holiday Wishes has been around for more than 25 years.  It is a Holiday Show made up of local talent.

We are looking for children in kindergarten through the fifth grade who would like to sing in our children’s chorus.  Rehearsals will start on October 7th at the First Congregational Church from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm.  The church is located at 210 W. Saginaw Hwy. in Grand Ledge.

The show will be held on December 7th & 8th at the Grand Ledge Opera House.  The show starts at 7:00 pm.  All proceeds from the show go to the Grand Ledge Food Bank.

Contact me Christine Douglas with any questions. My phone number is 517-643-0993. I have been the Children’s Choral director for more than 15 years, and the children always seem to have a great time participating in the show. Thank you, Christine.
