From Our Principal
Delta Center STARS:
We had a fantastic second week of school! Staff and students are busy building routines and a positive school culture. This week, we reviewed Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) lessons for common areas and classroom expectations. It’s great to see everyone back and students quickly demonstrating STAR behaviors—being Safe, Trustworthy, Attentive, and Respectful!
NWEA and Additional Assessments:
Understanding our students' educational needs is key to their success. Next week, we will administer the NWEA and Acadience (DIBELS) assessments for reading and math. NWEA adapts to each student's responses to pinpoint their skills in both reading and math. Acadience and other diagnostics drill down further to assess more specific reading abilities and needs. These assessments are essential for guiding instruction. Look for communication from your child's teacher about specific assessment dates to ensure your child is well-rested and has a healthy breakfast. Once the data is compiled, our team will use it to tailor learning to each student's needs.
Pick-up Procedures:
For those who regularly pick up their children, we ask that you follow the procedure outlined in this document to ensure a safe and efficient pick-up process. Please use the visor tags provided by the school and display them on your vehicle’s visor when you arrive. This allows our staff to quickly identify your child and bring them to you promptly. If two or more children attend Delta Center, your older child will wait with their younger sibling during pick-up.
Please contact the school office if you need additional visor tags or have any questions about the process. Thank you for your cooperation in making our pick-up process smooth and safe!
Grand Ledge Public Schools Attendance Policy:
-
- In order to help provide supports for students and families, GLPS closely monitors explained and unexplained absences. We also work with families to ensure that as many absences as possible are documented, because undocumented absences can trigger truancy considerations.
- Documented Absence (AD) - Absence that includes a note from a professional (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.) to explain the absence. Absences are only considered documented for the days identified in the note. For example, if a doctor excuses a student for Monday and Tuesday, but the student is absent on Wednesday and Thursday as well, only Monday and Tuesday’s absences are considered documented. Any absence that does not include a note from a professional is considered undocumented.
- Explained Absence (AE) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian calls the office or sends a note to alert the school their child will not be in attendance, but does not include a note from a professional (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.). This is important because explained absences are necessary for schools to meet pupil accounting requirements.
- Unexplained Absence (AU) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian does not call the office to alert the school their child will not be in attendance.
- A student's school will send a letter after 6 undocumented absences and after 10 undocumented absences in a school year, providing you with notice of the absences and outlining steps to help your child attend school regularly.
- A student's school will communicate with families if the student has undocumented absences on more than 10% of the first 30 days.
- Ten (10) or more days of undocumented absences in a school year can be sent to court. However, GLPS will make every effort to work with you and your student before it gets to that point.
- Please note that school related absences, such as field trips or athletic events, are not factored into any truancy related processes.
- In order to help provide supports for students and families, GLPS closely monitors explained and unexplained absences. We also work with families to ensure that as many absences as possible are documented, because undocumented absences can trigger truancy considerations.
Thank you for your attention to these important details as we work towards a successful school year! As always, if you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Blessings in a Backpack
If your student needs additional food at home, the Grand Ledge Blessings in a Backpack program is here. For over a decade, this program has provided bags of food for weekend meals at no cost to hundreds of students in the Grand Ledge area. For students attending school in-person, a bag of nourishing, kid-friendly food will be placed discretely in their backpack or locker at the end of each week during the school year (except during school breaks.) Examples of some of the food items distributed are: macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, soup, oatmeal, granola bars, fruit cups, and beef ravioli. If you would like your student to participate in the program, please fill out the permission form that went home or request one from the office. Return the form to the school office by Wednesday, September 11th, for your student to receive the first bag on September 19th.
Lost and Found
The lost and found is located near the gym. If your student is missing something, please have them check the lost and found. Labeling clothing/items will also help us to return things to students. Thank you!

Hi Delta Center families!
My name is Mindi Stevens and I’m excited to be returning as your child’s school counselor. I am happy to report that Delta Center also has a social work intern from MSU named Miss Sarah that will be helping in our building this school year. We are here to support all the students here at Delta Center and their families.
Throughout the school year, we will be providing classroom lessons to all students focused on social and emotional skills as well as career awareness. We will also be teaching social skills in the form of small groups and providing individual check ins with students who need extra support.
If you have any questions or need anything, please let me know.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with your students!
Have a great weekend!

Grand Ledge Public Schools is excited to offer free breakfast and free lunch to all students this school year – thanks to the Michigan School Meals Program!
Even though meals will be provided for free, it's important for families to continue to complete the application / Education Benefits Form.
The information collected from the application / Education Benefits Form for the Michigan School Meals Program is used to provide additional services and benefits beyond just school meals. The information is needed to ensure students get all the benefits they are entitled to and so schools receives state and federal funding for educational programs. Without this information, Grand Ledge Public Schools could lose critical funding for educational programs that help our students.
By filling out the application / Education Benefits Form, your child and/or family may also qualify for other benefits such as:
- Programs that provide food support
- School sports fee waiver
- Programs that assist with school fees
- Potential household support for cable and internet
- Summer EBT money
The application / Education Benefits Form is located at https://grandledge.familyportal.cloud – click on "Apply For Benefits" to start your quick application.
Paper applications are also available in all school offices or by calling the food service office at 517-925-5733.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with Darrin Gyurich at 517-925-5733.

Be creative, study science, be artistic, and understand how things work – all while making friends and having fun by joining Destination Imagination!
DI is a STEAM-based, competitive extracurricular activity that promotes creativity and teamwork for students in grades 3 through high school. Early learning opportunities are also available for K-2 students.
Each year, teams pick a challenge to tackle, work on it at weekly practices, try their hand at instant challenges and then showcase their teamwork and solutions at a regional tournament. Challenges are in the technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational, engineering and service learning categories. Click this link for a brief video overview of the challenges.
Interested parents and students from any Grand Ledge school can learn more about the program and this year’s challenges on Monday, Sept. 16, 6:15-7:15 p.m. in the Delta Center Elementary media room or Thursday, Sept. 19, 7-8 p.m. virtually via Google Meet,. The meetings have the same content: you’ll learn about this year’s challenges and how the program works.
