Hello, DC Families!
Thank you for partnering with us to support your students in coming to school and learning each day. Our average daily attendance so far this school year is 95.2%. That is excellent! Our goal is to maintain attendance above 95% every day.
This is a great time to check your student’s attendance and count how many absences they have had so far this year. In an earlier communication, I shared a poster for your refrigerator that can be used to track absences throughout the year.
Our goal is for students to have fewer than 10 absences for the entire school year. Arriving late or leaving early also results in lost learning time and can add up to have a negative impact similar to a full-day absence. Consistent, daily attendance is best. Thank you for making your student’s attendance a priority!
Curriculum Night
Next Wednesday, September 23, from 5:30–6:30 p.m., we will host our first annual Curriculum Night at DC. This event will focus on sharing what and how your students are learning this school year.
There will be short presentations highlighting both Math and ELA, along with information booths in the hallways featuring handouts and information about all content areas.
This evening is designed primarily to share information with adults rather than serve as a student-focused event. We look forward to seeing you at DC!
Zones of Regulation and Peace Path
Over the last few weeks, each classroom has been learning about the Zones of Regulation and Peace Path.
Zones of Regulation provides a common language across our school for discussing how we are feeling and identifying strategies that can help students move toward the Green Zone and be in the best mindset for learning. Here is a Zones of Regulation poster to reference.
We have also introduced and begun using Peace Path as a strategy for conflict resolution. Peace Path helps students develop social awareness, understand how their actions affect others, and work through conflicts in a constructive way.

Both Zones of Regulation and Peace Path are great strategies to discuss and practice with your students at home!

Attendance / Absence Policy
All absences from school conflict with the continuity of learning and need to be avoided when possible. Regular school attendance is necessary to academic success and continuous and consecutive attendance in school is required by State law; 10-undocumented absences limit per school year. The 10-absence limit per school year includes both Explained Absence (AE) and Unexplained Absence (AU).
In order to help provide supports for students and families, GLPS closely monitors explained and unexplained absences. We also work with families to ensure that as many absences as possible are documented, because undocumented absences can trigger truancy considerations.
Documented Absence (AD) - Absence that includes a note from a professional (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.) to explain the absence. Absences are only considered documented for the days identified in the note. For example, if a doctor excuses a student for Monday and Tuesday, but the student is absent on Wednesday and Thursday as well, only Monday and Tuesday’s absences are considered documented. Any absence that does not include a note from a professional is considered undocumented.
Explained Absence (AE) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian calls the office or sends a note to alert the school their child will not be in attendance, but does not include a note from a professional (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.). This is important because explained absences are necessary for schools to meet pupil accounting requirements.
Unexplained Absence (AU) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian does not call the office to alert the school their child will not be in attendance.
Undocumented Absence Letter - A student's school will send a letter after 6 undocumented absences and after 10 undocumented absences in a school year, providing you with notice of the absences and outlining steps to help your child attend school regularly.
A student's school will communicate with families if the student has undocumented absences on more than 10% of the first 30 days.
Ten (10) or more days of undocumented absences in a school year can be sent to court. However, GLPS will make every effort to work with you and your student before it gets to that point.
Please note that school related absences, such as field trips or athletic events, are not factored into any truancy related processes.
Smiles On Wheels for Kindergarten
If you are a parent of a BK or Kindergarten student and they have not yet had their dental assessment, we will have Smile on Wheels here November 17th!

Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment (KOHA)
Smiles on Wheels will be here to provide the Kindergarten Oral Health Assessments (KOHA) in partnership with the Health Department. Like hearing and vision screenings, this is now a state requirement for ALL kindergarten students.
This is a visual oral assessment ONLY. No cleanings or other services are done. If you do not want your child to participate, please call the office and send a written note with
your child stating you would like to opt out. A letter from a dental office must then be provided to the school as proof of meeting the requirement.

Volunteering at Delta Center
Volunteering & Chaperoning
Persons wishing to volunteer for Grand Ledge Public Schools are required to complete the Volunteer Registration Form and be approved prior to serving as a volunteer. All volunteers MUST check in at the office to receive a BADGE prior to proceeding to any other area on school property. Please visit District Volunteer Application to complete the process.
Please note: the background check takes a few days to process, so submit your application in advance based on your volunteer plans.
If your student will be moving to a different school next year, be sure to select both their current school and the school they’ll be attending.
For example: If your child is currently in 4th grade at Delta Center and will attend Hayes next year, select Delta Center and Hayes on the application. This ensures you’ll be cleared to volunteer at both locations when needed. Applications are valid for one calendar year.
