Dear Hayes Intermediate Families,

Here is some news to get us into the weekend…

Solar Eclipse

As Dr. Barnes shared in his weekly update, eclipse glasses will be provided for every student on Monday. Hayes students will have short lessons on what a solar eclipse is and will have the opportunity to view the initial stages of the eclipse with their Enrichment classes outside before we dismiss for the day.

Lockdown Drills

By law, we are required to conduct 3 “Lockdown” drills each school year. One of these drills must be conducted while a significant number of students are transitioning in the school building. Our final drill of the year will be conducted this week; teachers will go over procedures for such drills this week as well.

Beagle Middle School Elective Roadshow--For Rising 7th Graders

On April 9th, Dave Kushman, Principal, and Kelly Shumway, Assistant Principal, will be at Hayes Intermediate to meet with our rising 7th grade students for the Beagle Middle Elective Roadshow.  This is a great opportunity for the Beagle administrators to connect with our rising 7th grade students and to explain how their daily schedule works.  During this time, they will also review the elective offerings, discuss how to make elective requests, and how those requests will be entered into PowerSchool with the support of the Hayes team. Students will receive an all-in-one document that includes elective course descriptions along with a worksheet where students can pencil in their elective course requests under the guidance of their parents. Later in the spring, Dave and Kelly will be connecting consistently with rising 7th grade families to provide updates for next school year.

Progress Report Feedback

We recently debuted our new progress report. Directions for accessing it were sent home in March. We would like feedback on this progress report and also on the Parent Teacher Conference experience that happened before Spring Break. If you haven’t already, please fill out this form to let us know what you think!

PTO Board Needs Members

The Hayes-Beagle Parent Teacher Organization has worked hard to provide opportunities for students and staff over the past 3 years that would not have been available without a PTO. Several PTO Board members will be leaving the PTO as their students age into High School. The commitment is as little as an hour a month for the meeting and you can help with fun jobs such as buying treats for students and staff. You can also help plan the dances and other activities that your student will participate in! Without a board, the PTO is legitimately in danger of ceasing to exist. Please come to the next meeting on April 9th at the Beagle Middle School Media Center at 6:30 PM to find out more. You can also join via Zoom - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82744686994

MSTEP and NWEA Testing

Year-end MSTEP and NWEA Testing will be occurring at Hayes Intermediate from April 15-May 24. Classroom teachers will communicate with you about specific dates. Students who miss a designated testing day will be able to participate in makeup testing.

International Day

We invite you to join us for International Day this year on April 13 from 2-6 at Beagle Middle School. International Day is a day to celebrate our cultural diversity and to learn from each other!  There are many different ways to participate on this special day. You may simply attend and enjoy watching PERFORMANCES, looking at DISPLAYS or admiring clothing. Or, you may wish to create a display, perform or be a part of the fashion show (please sign up using the provided forms).  New this year - FOOD TRUCKS - Picnic, La Fajita and Shove It from the Lansing and Grand Ledge area offering International and fusion recipes!  We look forward to seeing you and your family!

Hayes Happenings

Hayes Happenings is our weekly news show that is student directed, produced, and edited under the guidance of teachers Jacque Cosgrove and Allison Shumate. There were some technical difficulties with producing this week’s episode, however here is a special tribute to Mr. Bedolla that our team created.
