From Our Principal

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and time off. This week, teachers and staff reviewed PBIS expectations and daily procedures with students to help keep our school running smoothly.

NWEA and DIBELS Assessments – Next week, we will begin NWEA and DIBELS assessments. Our winter data is critical as it directly drives instruction, helping to strengthen teaching and learning. It prepares students for mastering grade-level standards and getting ready for success on the M-STEP. Look for communication from your child’s teacher about specific dates and ensure your child is well-rested and has a healthy breakfast.

Lockdown Information – We conducted a lockdown drill this week. I commend our students and staff for the continued improvement in the understanding and efficiency of lockdown procedures. During our lockdown drills, we practice securing staff and students, stopping line of sight to staff and students from doors and windows, barricading doors with Nightlock devices or other methods, communication methods among staff and emergency responders, and the process of relocating large groups of students (such as in preparation to transport students to another location). Lockdown drills are only one aspect of school safety. Other aspects include training, reporting concerns, investigating reports, physical access to the building, policies and practices around human behavior, and supporting all of our students. We continue to reflect and improve in each of these areas.

Student Pickup & Carline Procedure Updates

To support student safety and ensure a smooth dismissal process, we are refining our student pickup and carline procedures with an intentional focus on safety. Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to best serve our students and families.

All students now have designated “Safe Right Spaces” where they wait for their caregiver during dismissal, whether they are walk-up or carline pickup students. At dismissal time, staff will escort students to their assigned class lines so we can clearly see where all students are and safely support their transition to caregivers.

Carline Pickup Procedures

  • Families using the carline should pull all the way forward toward the stop sign into the numbered pickup spaces (1–5) to keep the line moving safely and efficiently.
  • Once your vehicle has safely stopped in the farthest available position, staff will escort your child to your vehicle.

Parent Waiting Areas

  • To keep dismissal organized and safe, we ask that pickup parents wait only along the designated fence area (highlighted in red on the graphic below). This allows the sidewalk space to remain clear for students to line up by grade level and class.
  • For safety reasons, please remain away from the front of the exchange line and car line area, where teachers and teaching assistants are actively supervising and supporting student transitions.

What Families Need to Know

Please review their Safe Right Space with your child. Students have received lessons and understand expectations, including:

  • Keeping hands and feet to themselves
  • Staying attentive during pickup
  • Remaining in their assigned line

It truly takes a village to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your support, flexibility, and partnership as we work together to ensure a safe, smooth, and efficient dismissal process for all students.

Looking for Donations

We are also running low on our school supplies of gloves, mittens, hats (pants and underwear too!) for our students!  Please consider donating new or gently used to our office. Students use these items frequently and we like to have extra supplies.

We appreciate it so much!

P.E. News

Hello DC Families and Friends!

I want to make sure my students have exactly what they need to succeed, so I've created a Golf project through DonorsChoose, the nonprofit classroom funding site for public school teachers.

Here's my project:

Teeing Up Opportunities: Golf for All!

Your support would mean so much to my students!

Thank you for considering a gift to my class!

P.S. If you know anyone who may want to help my students, please pass this along!

Attendance / Absence Policy

All absences from school conflict with the continuity of learning and need to be avoided when possible. Regular school attendance is necessary to academic success and continuous and consecutive attendance in school is required by State law; 10-undocumented absences limit per school year.  The 10-absence limit per school year includes both Explained Absence (AE) and Unexplained Absence (AU).

In order to help provide supports for students and families, GLPS closely monitors explained and unexplained absences. We also work with families to ensure that as many absences as possible are documented, because undocumented absences can trigger truancy considerations.

Documented Absence (AD) - Absence that includes a note from a professional  (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.) to explain the absence. Absences are only considered documented for the days identified in the note. For example, if a doctor excuses a student for Monday and Tuesday, but the student is absent on Wednesday and Thursday as well, only Monday and Tuesday’s absences are considered documented. Any absence that does not include a note from a professional is considered undocumented.

Explained Absence (AE) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian calls the office or sends a note to alert the school their child will not be in attendance, but does not include a note from a professional (ie. doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.). This is important because explained absences are necessary for schools to meet pupil accounting requirements.

Unexplained Absence (AU) - Undocumented absence in which a parent/guardian does not call the office to alert the school their child will not be in attendance.

Attendance Policy - Undocumented Absences

A student's school will send a letter after 6 undocumented absences and after 10 undocumented absences in a school year, providing you with notice of the absences and outlining steps to help your child attend school regularly.

A student's school will communicate with families if the student has undocumented absences on more than 10% of the first 30 days.

Ten (10) or more days of undocumented absences in a school year can be sent to court. However, GLPS will make every effort to work with you and your student before it gets to that point.

Please note that school related absences, such as field trips or athletic events, are not factored into any truancy related processes.

Volunteering at Delta Center

Volunteering & Chaperoning

Persons wishing to volunteer for Grand Ledge Public Schools are required to complete the Volunteer Registration Form and be approved prior to serving as a volunteer.  All volunteers MUST check in at the office to receive a BADGE prior to proceeding to any other area on school property.  Please visit District Volunteer Application to complete the process.

Please note: the background check takes a few days to process, so submit your application in advance based on your volunteer plans.

If your student will be moving to a different school next year, be sure to select both their current school and the school they’ll be attending.
For example: If your child is currently in 4th grade at Delta Center and will attend Hayes next year, select Delta Center and Hayes on the application. This ensures you’ll be cleared to volunteer at both locations when needed. Applications are valid for one calendar year.
