Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law, requires that Grand Ledge Public Schools (GLPS), with certain exceptions, obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child's educational records.  However, GLPS may disclose appropriately designated "directory information" without written consent, unless you have advised the District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures.  The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Grand Ledge Public Schools to include this type of information from your child's education records in certain school publications.  Examples include:

·   A playbill, showing your student's role in a drama production;

·   Graduation Programs;

·   Yearbooks;

·   Honor roll or other recognition lists;

·   Sports activity sheets, such as for wrestling, showing weight and height of team members

Directory information, which is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released, can also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent's prior written consent.  Outside organizations include, but are not limited to, companies that manufacture class rings or publish yearbooks.

In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies (LEAs) receiving assistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters, upon request, with the following information - names, addresses and telephone listings - unless parents have advised the district they do not want their student's information disclosed without their prior written consent.[1]

If you do not want us to disclose your child's directory information, you must notify us, in writing, on or before the last Friday of each September.  Letters may be sent directly to your child's school, or to the district office at:

Immunization Update

Schools in Michigan are required to report the immunization status of all children entering kindergarten, all 6th grade students, and all children 11 through 18 years of age who are changing school districts.

All students must have documentation from a health professional of the following immunizations:

Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR)

Hepatitis B

This is a series of three shots.

Chickenpox (Varicella)

After 12 months of age – or the approximate date of chickenpox disease

11-18 year old students

Complete Series

Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (CTP,DtaP, DT or TD) With 1 Dose of Tdap within the last 5 years

For incoming 6th graders & 11-18 year old students changing school districts

These immunization requirements help assure all school-aged children are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

If your child needs immunizations, contact your physician or the local health department. If you have questions regarding school immunization requirements, contact the Barry-Eaton District Health Department at 485-7110.

If you hold religious or philosophical beliefs against vaccination, you must sign an Immunization Waiver Form, which is available at your school office. If your child has a medical condition precluding him/her from receiving vaccinations, you must sign a Medical Contraindication Form, also available from your school office.

As your child’s immunizations are updated, please provide documentation to your school.

We thank you in advance for assisting us in keeping this important piece of information up-to-date.

Parent / Student Portal

Student and Parent Access

PowerSchool parents and students have been logging in to check real-time grades and attendance since 1997. Since that time, the PowerSchool parent and student portal has grown in popularity to become the most visited SIS portal on the web.

As a PowerSchool parent, you can check to see whether or not your child is in class right now, find out what tonight's homework is, confirm that last night's homework was handed in, and view your child's final grades as they exist in the teacher's gradebook at this very moment. You can also track the formative progress of your child's performance on state standards, register to receive alert notifications, review the daily comments from teachers, and much more.

If each parent/guardian has not created a new user account since July 3, 2012, you will have to create a new user account to access the Parent Portal.

PDF DocumentParent Portal Single Sign-On Setup Guide

This new Single Sign-On feature will allow each parent/guardian to have one login for Parent Portal, but allow the parent to view each of their student's grades, attendance and other information.  Also, parents/guardians should no longer share login credentials as each should establish their own unique login and password.  Click on the image below to enable sign in.

School Health Information & Forms

School policy regarding drugs and medications taken at school is designed for the safety of all students.  When a student is required to take drugs or medications at school, any and all medications must be delivered to the school office by a parent/guardian or an adult parent representative - NOT BY STUDENTS.

If possible, please arrange to have medication given at home.

Students with respiratory or highly allergic conditions will be allowed to carry inhalers and/or emergency medical kits with them while at school, as long as the authorization form is on file at the school.

Consent forms to dispense medication at school are also available in the school office.

You will need to complete the necessary form(s) below, print them out to  obtain the physician's signature and then return the completed form to the school before any medication will be given at school.

If you have any questions, please contact our school nurse, Cindy Bummette,RN at 517-925-5425.
