Dear Hayes Parents,
First off, thank you so much for your positive support and patience during our first week of virtual learning at Hayes. It has been a learning curve for us all--that is for sure! To be honest, if we were in-person there would still be other struggles such as finding and opening lockers, keeping schedules straight, and going to the correct lunch, which usually takes our students about three weeks to get adjusted to those routines--especially our 7th graders. The virtual process and routine will take some time as well, and we will get there together.
While there were some intermittent connection issues early in the week, we are happy to report that by Thursday the vast majority of those issues were resolved. If your child experienced any difficulties this week, we do apologize for the inconvenience. Please continue to reach out to our support line at (517) 925-5686 for any issues that may arise. Eric and I will continue to make ourselves available for technical support on Monday and Tuesday next week. Please have your student click on the link within the “Daily Announcement” section on their Buzz homepage to access us for support. We will do our best to continue to connect with those that drop in for support.
Next week, we will distribute school materials on Wednesday, September 16th and Thursday, September 17th from 4-6 pm. Please note that not all classes require the distribution of materials; in fact, most materials are digital. It will mainly be English novels for most students. Please review the list of teachers requesting material distribution below with your student, making a note of the teacher’s name and the resource needed.
VD Moore- Clay (Mixed Media class only); all Art classes 3 sheets of paper.
Zerman-- Instruments to individual students
Kelly-- Spanish, materials labeled in envelope names and hours; Strong Inside novel
Shumway--STEM Introduction to Design and Modeling bags
Hager- Ghost Boys novels
Richey--Strong Inside novel
Oren- Long Walk to Water novel(8th)
Mitchell- Long Walk to Water novel
Earle -- TI calculator, whiteboard, marker
Anderson -- Geometry textbook (only for 1st Hour Geometry class)
Dionise--Algebra textbook (only hours 1,2, and 5 Algebra AB classes)

Distribution will occur in our parking lot. Please use the drop-off/pick-up lane that circumvents the parking lot, and please stay in your car. When you pull up to the main entrance, a staff member will approach your car requesting the following information: student name, teacher, and resource needed. They will place the resources in your vehicle. We will make this as efficient and safe as possible. The teachers listed above will be communicating with their students early next week about the resources that need to be picked up from the school.
We are happy to announce that we are about to kick off fall sports, which include: cross country, volleyball, and football. Mrs. Hernandez has sent out correspondences to our students and families directly from our athletic director, Mr. Steve Baker, but we wanted to send along another reminder here as well.
Cross Country practice starts Sept 14. Practice is 3:45-5:00 at Hayes. Athletes interested in running must have an updated Sports Physical prior to the first day of practice. You must also bring your own water bottle and mask to all practices. We will forward more details as they become available.
Volleyball try-outs will take place on September 14, 15, and 16th. 8th grade try-outs will be from 4:30-6:00pm; 7th grade will be from 6:30-8:00pm each day.
Football practice begins on Tuesday, September 15th. Equipment handout for 7th grade will be on Sunday, September 13th at 5pm at the Marsh Youth Football Field Shed; equipment handout for 8th grade will be on Monday, September 14th at 5pm at the same location.
For more information about fall sports, including information about updated physicals, please visit our Hayes Homepage, find the “Fall Sports Information” icon, and then click on sport of interest. These links all the detailed information for your young athlete directly from our athletic office.
Quick Recap of the Daily Routine
Just a friendly reminder that students should attend each class, each day. There are no live sessions on Fridays; however, there will be “On Demand” work for students to complete for each class on Fridays. Our daily routine as well as days for “Live” sessions by course are posted on our homepage as well. Completion of the “On Demand” work is just as important as attending “Live” sessions as the topics and activities are interconnected. Please encourage your student to continue to follow the daily routine and attend all classes on a daily basis.
Again, thank you for your patience and support this week. If your student has any difficulties next week, then please feel free to reach out using the help link on their Buzz landing page, or please have them call Mrs. Jordan-Thelen at (517) 925-5686.
