Dear Hayes Parents, 

In this week’s newsletter the following is new information:  7th grade elective request process for next year, 8th grade course registration for high school, updated MSTEP information, and a friendly reminder about maintaining programming for students.  In addition, the week of May 17th, our virtual families will be able to drop-off 8th grade English novels from earlier in the year.  Other school-issued resources will be collected later in May or early June as they are still being used. These new/updated sections are front-loaded in this week’s newsletter; the end of the newsletter contains redundant--yet very important--information.  We wanted to give a preface here to expedite your reading enjoyment:). 

 

7th Grade Elective Request Process for Next Year

On Wednesday, we communicated to our current 7th grade parents and students regarding the process for choosing preferred electives for next school year.  Parents and students both received the same resources, which included: a video explaining the process, an electronic coursebook, and a link to a google form to note preferred electives.  Students will receive an email once they submit the google form, and they need to star that email in their inbox as they will use it next week in Science classes to enter their requests into PowerSchool.  The google form must be completed by Wednesday, May 12th.  

 

8th Grade Course Registration for Next Year

Ken Wright, Principal of Grand Ledge High School, sent an email to all 8th grade parents and students on Wednesday. Please look for that email regarding freshmen orientation. We will include some of the important links from that email here:

Principal Wright will also be sending 8th grade parents and students an informational video regarding registering for classes in PowerSchool on Monday, May 10th, so please look for that resource to come.

Since the high school staff are experts in their courses, graduation requirements, and programming options, please be sure to attend the Zoom Q&A sessions if you have questions, and communicate with them moving forward if you should have any further questions. 

 

MSTEP May 11th and 12th

As we have been discussing, MSTEP will be on May 11th and 12th for both in-person and virtual students.  In-person students will test from 7:40-10:30; virtual students that have registered to test on the google form that was sent out last week and on Monday of this week will test from 11:30-2:30.  Please note that MSTEP testing is optional, we must offer it to all students, it can only be done in-person due to registration guidelines, and it will not impact academic placement in subsequent years. 

Students taking the MSTEP assessment must bring their school-issued chromebooks with them to school.  If your student does not have a school-issued chromebook, they will be provided one in their testing room.  Students must also bring earbuds with them both days; we too will provide earbuds as necessary.  Testing room assignments were posted throughout the building this week for in-person students to view.  On Monday, virtual students that have registered for the MSTEP will receive an email with their testing room number.  Please note that the registration window for virtual students to sign up to take the MSTEP is now closed.  

 

Consistent Attendance for In-Person or Virtual

We would like to take this opportunity to note that it is very challenging for our students and teachers to toggle back and forth from in-person to virtual instruction during the school day.  If your child is an in-person student, then they need to attend school in-person on a consistent basis for consistency purposes.  The only reason in-person students should be attending classes virtually is if they are placed in quarantine.  Thank you for adhering to this expectation as it is in the best interest of the child and our teaching staff. 

 

Virtual Student English Novel Drop--Off

For our virtual families, we will have a table set up outside the main entrance for parents to return 8th grade English novels the week of May 17th from 4-6 pm.  We will put another reminder in next week’s newsletter.

Home Screening For In-Person Students

We thank our parents for continuing to screen their in-person students each day before sending them to school.  Please keep children home if they are experiencing any symptoms.  Please keep children home if there is a positive case in your household and/or if you believe your child has been exposed to a positive case elsewhere until the potential for Covid has been formally ruled out.  Please communicate with us by calling (517) 925-5680 if your child is staying home for the aforementioned reasons, and please follow the directions in the section below. 

 

Reporting Positive Cases

In-person families should report any positive Covid cases within their household to the district by emailing health@glcomets.net and calling the hotline at (517) 925-5725.  In addition, please contact the school with this information by calling (517) 925-5680.  If there is a positive case within your household, then please keep your in-person student home until you hear back from Cindy Brummette, district nurse.
