February 12, 2021

Dear Hayes Parents,

It has been a busy week for all of us with a lot of emails floating around.  We thank you for your continued support and patience as we are trying to get information out as quickly as possible.

First, winter NWEA kicks off on the week of Tuesday, February 16th with our Math department leading the pack.  Our ELA department will engage students in NWEA the following week.  Math and ELA teachers have informed students of the logistics for NWEA, so please encourage your student to watch their Buzz tiles in the weeks to come and for further communications from their Math and ELA teachers.

Second, school pictures will be hosted by Geskus here at Hayes on Wednesday, March 3 from 4-8pm for those interested in school pictures for their student; school pictures are not required.  Pictures will be taken in our gymnasium here at Hayes; masks and social distancing are required.  There will be more information in future newsletters regarding pictures.  If you would prefer to submit a “selfie” in lieu of a school photo for the yearbook, then please send that picture to Mrs. Jennie Hernandez at hernandezj@glcomets.net.

Third, the honor list for the first trimester has been updated on our website.  Here is the link

Trimester 1 Honor Roll.

Fourth, sports--both traditional practices and competitions-- have started back up within our district. Girls’ Basketball tryouts are tentatively planned for the first week of March, and our athletic department will be finalizing the details for the Girls’ season in the near future.  Once information and logistics have been finalized, we will communicate that out within our newsletter. Boys’ basketball competitions will begin Monday, February 15th; the final game will be on Wednesday, March 3rd.  Also, Hayes MIddle School Wrestling practices are scheduled to begin on Monday, February 8th from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Practices this year will be held at the Grand Ledge High School Wrestling Room. Students should enter the building through the Northwest Parking lot located off Kent Street. Students must wear a mask and arrive dressed and ready to go. All students must have a valid MHSAA physical on file in the Hayes Office or bring one with them to the first practice. A physical is considered current if it is dated on or after April 1st, 2020. 8th graders who had a physical from the 2019-2020 school year only require a MHSAA Health Questionnaire, which can be found at this link:

MHSAA Health Questionnaire.

Last, yesterday we reached out to both our limited in-person return families and our virtual-only families separately regarding the duration of the second trimester.  Moving forward, we will continue to communicate in a separate fashion with both groups to avoid unnecessary emails and the potential for confusion.  Limited In-Person return families will receive a good deal of information over the next two weeks as outlined in our email yesterday; virtual-only families will receive more information during the week of February 22nd. We have also communicated with students in both groups in the same fashion, and we will continue to do so.  Please note that an application for in-person or virtual-only instruction will be coming out to our parents for trimester three within the next few weeks.

That is all that we have for now.  If you have any questions or concerns, then please feel free to reach out.  Please enjoy the three-day weekend!

Take care,

Dave and Eric
