December 4, 2020
Dear Hayes Parents,
Thank you for completing the Step Two registration for winter instruction. We are actively looking at this data and preparing for limited in-person instruction in January. Over the next few weeks, we will be solidifying our structures to support students in-person and virtually, and we will communicate those plans over the next few weeks to come. In addition, we thank you for your support and communication during parent-teacher conferences this week. Please continue to keep those lines of communication going directly with our teaching staff as necessary.
Trimester Change and Electives
As we discussed in previous newsletters, the end of the first trimester will be on Friday, December 18th; the second trimester will begin on Monday, January 4th. At the middle level, students do not rotate their core-content teachers; however, elective courses--aside from year-long elective courses--will rotate. On Monday, January 4th, your student’s Buzz tiles will reflect their elective courses for trimester two per their year-long schedule within PowerSchool.
Live Friday’s Beginning Friday, December 11th
We are happy to announce that beginning Friday, December 11th all classes will be hosting “Live” sessions that are 25-minutes in duration. Based on feedback from our students, stakeholders, and teachers, the leadership team has decided to pilot “Live Fridays” for a portion of the second trimester, and we feel it would be best to make this adjustment prior to the beginning of the second trimester. Our goal for these shorter sessions on Friday is to provide our students with an additional, structured connection with all teachers and to help book-end the week. Attendance is expected by students and participation will be tracked in PowerSchool. We feel that this will be very beneficial for our students. The schedule for Fridays moving forward is as follows:
8:15-8:40- 1st hour
8:45-9:10- 2nd hour
9:15-9:40- 3rd hour
9:45-10:10- 4th hour
12:25-3:15-Asynchronous/On-Demand Activities based on individual teacher discretion or individualized student support.
On Monday, December 7th, we will send an email as well as a video to all of our students explaining this change for Fridays. Please have a conversation with your student regarding this change, and please inform them that we will be providing more detailed information via email and video on Monday. Finally, we will also update this adjustment to student’s Buzz tiles and our homepage next week.
Beginning Wednesday, December 9th, Mr. Leopold and I along with our school counselors, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Taylor, will be hosting “Live” virtual lunches where students can meet up virtually, have lunch, and catch up as if they were truly in school. Moving forward, we will have “Live Lunches” from 12:00-12:30 every Wednesday. There will be four separate “Live Lunch” links for these meetings posted on each student’s landing page within Buzz. If your child would like to participate in a Live Lunch session, all they have to do is click on one of the four “Live Lunch” links on their landing page during the aforementioned time. Participation is completely optional, but we appreciate your support in promoting this social opportunity with your student. We will communicate the details of “Live Lunches” with students in our correspondence with them on Monday as well.
Again, we thank you for your support. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or feedback.
