This week our counselors presented a 1.5 day lesson on bullying to the 8th graders that focused on: creating awareness of the seriousness of the problem; identifying bully behaviors in themselves and others; learning multiple strategies to deal with a bully; understanding the importance of being a good bystander, or an "UPSTANDER".  The counselors will presenting the same lesson to the 7th grade students in mid-March.

Last week the counselors presented a 2-day lesson on Career Exploration with the 7th graders.  During this lesson, students: learned about the 6 Michigan Career Pathways, participated in an online career interest inventory called "Career Matchmaker", learned how to research careers within the online program "Career Cruising", and started their online Educational Development Plans (EDPs).  We encourage parents to ask their students to show them what they did within Career Cruising.  Students and parents may access Career Cruising from home, but will need the student's EDP Login username and password.

Dear Hayes Families,

This week is National School Counseling Week, Feb. 2-6. It is a week sponsored by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) to highlight the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success.

In Grand Ledge, you will find school counselors advocating for students in a variety of ways: counseling with individual students, teaching classroom lessons, facilitating educational support groups, providing career and college counseling, attending and presenting to professional colleagues at state conferences, consulting and collaborating with parents and teachers, serving on various school improvement teams, and serving as integral members of the school’s educational team to help create a positive school environment for all.

Grand Ledge school counselors are privileged to be part of preparing students today for the challenges and opportunities of a global society.

If you would like to learn more about the school-counseling program at Hayes Middle School please do not hesitate to call or email us.

Ele's Group--New Partnership at Hayes Middle School

New this year we will be teaming up with Ele's Place to provide grief and loss support groups for students who have experienced the death of someone close in their life.  Groups will be 8-weeks long during the school day.  We have already started our first group, but we will be starting another group in March.  If you or your student would like to participate in this group please contact the counseling office at (517) 925-5682.  For more information please visit .

8th Grade Career Exploration Day

All 8th graders will have an opportunity to visit the EISD/LCC Career Center in early March of 2012.  A counselor from the Career Center will be presenting information and a video about the Career Center in 8th grade English classes in early February.  After watching the video each student will take an online survey to select four programs (they will hopefully get to see at least two of their top four choices).  Each student will visit three programs during the visit.

To find more information about the career center please visit .

7th Grade Career Units and Educational Development Plans

Our Counselors, Mrs. Hamers and Ms. Trierweiler, are working collaboratively with 7th grade Language Arts Teachers, Mrs. Levi, Mrs. Jennings, Mrs. Nowak, and Mrs. Prieskorn to deliver Career lessons.  During this Career Unit our 7th graders will begin to create an “Educational Development Plan”, or “EDP”.  An EDP provides ongoing documentation of a student’s career awareness, exploration, and educational activities.  The purpose of an EDP is for each learner to develop, document, and periodically update a unique plan of career and educational preparation, based on thoughtfully selected and attainable career goals and educational options.  Ultimately, EDP activities and lessons should provide each individual with self-insight and guidance in order to take effective steps to enter a career of personal interest and choice.  The EDP process will continue in 8th grade (and beyond) when students update their interest inventories, narrow their career choices, visit the EISD/LCC Career Center, and formulate their 9th grade schedules of Grand Ledge High School.  Our 7th graders will be able to use this information to help them complete a career research paper for ELA.  We encourage you to further discuss this planning with your child and offer your own advice on career decision making:  after all, you should rightly be the most important influence in your child’s educational and vocational plans.
