Dear Beagle Middle School Parents,

Here are some important updates and reminders:

Continued Support with School Expectations at Home:  We have noticed a significant increase in inappropriate behavior, disrespect, and defiance towards adults within our student body, and these inappropriate behaviors are bothering students that are consistently following school expectations. Specifically, some students are struggling to keep their hands to themselves, and they are engaging in inappropriate horseplay in various settings.  Examples include: yanking backpacks of other students from behind causing them to fall or bump into other students, leapfrogging over random people, running through the hallways, and embracing as large groups while walking through congested hallways. When these behaviors are addressed by our staff, it is often met with students saying they were simply playing around, and many times students continue to engage in the behavior after it’s addressed, which results in school discipline. Much of this is driven by social media and Tik Tok challenges based on our investigation of many situations that often result in other students being hurt by the actions of a fellow classmate.  While we consistently and intentionally teach our students appropriate behaviors and expectations through Comet PRIDE lessons, pro-social lessons in Check and Connect, and consistent reminders during lunch announcements, inappropriate behavior is on the rise.  We also continue to remain consistent with school discipline, ensuring accountability for inappropriate behavior.  We greatly appreciate your continued support with reiterating appropriate school expectations with your student at home, specifically reiterating keeping hands to self and being respectful towards school staff.  We also encourage our students to continue to report physical contact situations to us directly, so that we can address them in accordance with our student handbook.

Chromebook Return: Students will be expected to turn in their assigned Chromebooks and chargers during Check and Connect classes between June 7th and June 10th. Chromebooks must be returned with chargers and cases (if your student took a case). Please send a check made out to Grand Ledge Public Schools to cover the cost of any broken/missing pieces when the Chromebook is returned. Here are the fees:

Missing Charger: $35

Missing Chromebook: $270

Damaged Chromebook: $50-$270, depending on the extent of the damage

MSTEP Scores: MSTEP scores take a great deal of time to process, so your student’s MSTEP results will not be available until early fall.  MSTEP scores can be accessed through Parent Portal by clicking on School Net, Standardized Tests, and then using the filter to identify the appropriate school year.  Again, these results will not be available until the fall.

Spring NWEA Testing:  Spring NWEA will finish up next week in ELA classrooms. As we have discussed previously in the year, NWEA is a norm-referenced, national, and standards-based assessment that helps to identify where children are with their learning, and it also helps to identify the next steps for learning.  NWEA data is actively reviewed by teaching and administrative staff to help guide instruction and provide necessary support and intervention when appropriate.  NWEA data comes back much faster than MSTEP, and it can be accessed in the same fashion via Parent Portal: School Net, Standardized Tests, and filtering for the correct year.  For a reference, scores between the 25–70th percentile are considered in the average range.  Fall and Winter NWEA scores are currently posted within School Net at this time, and Spring scores will be posted by the end of the school year.

June 15th End of Year Celebration (Big Fun Day):  Our last day of school is June 15th, which is a half-day, and we plan on celebrating all of our students with a Big Fun Day filled with inflatable obstacle courses; tug of war; laser tag; and a gaggle of additional fun, outdoor activities.  This has been a tradition at the middle level for the past decade (prior to COVID), and we intend on having even more activities for our students this year.  There will be more detailed information in subsequent newsletters.

Hayes/Beagle Joint PTO:  The next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, June 1st at 6 pm via Zoom. We welcome and encourage Beagle parents to attend our PTO meetings.  Here is the recurring Zoom link for future PTO meetings:http://  You can also stay up-to-date with the Hayes and Beagle PTO by following them on Facebook.

Students Leaving Grand Ledge:  If your student will not be returning to GLPS for the 2022-23 school year, then please email Joan Pedraza at, providing your student’s name and why they will not be returning.

Students’ of the Week, Extra Curricular, and Community Resources:  To view our students of the week or to review additional community/extra curricular information on our webpage, then please click and then click on the appropriate link on our homepage.

These are all the updates that we have for now.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Take care,

Dave and Eric
