Dear Beagle Middle School Parents,

Here are some updates we wanted to share with you:

Winter NWEA: Winter NWEA testing started this week, and testing will take place–including make-ups–for the next two weeks.  We intentionally test one content area per week to prevent testing burn-out with our students.  English teachers have finished up testing this week; next week, our Math teachers will assess students in their classes. Our counseling staff will conduct make-up testing sessions the week of February 7th, and students will be pulled from their elective classes to complete their NWEA testing.

Social Media Watch: We have noticed an uptick in reports of inappropriate content that students are accessing or posting on social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Some students are posting pictures of other students (or staff) without their consent. While the school cannot control what is posted on those sites, some posts may fall under the category of cyberbullying. Many students do not have access to social media. Thank you, parents, for holding the line! There should not be a need to access social media, or even have a smart phone at the Middle School level. If you feel that your students ARE ready for social media, and for all of the expectations and responsibilities associated with it, please regularly monitor what they are posting and what kinds of posts they are receiving from their peers.

Covid Update: Beagle continues to implement mitigation measures. COVID-19 numbers were down this week as compared from last week; however, positive covid cases remain higher than earlier in the year. All positive cases district-wide that were on school property are recorded daily online on our COVID-19 Dashboard.  Because of the GLPS universal masking during the instructional day, most close contacts from exposures at school need only to monitor for symptoms using the GLPS COVID-19 Family Screener and to wear a mask at school (“mask to stay”).  We are required to share information with health departments, and you may be contacted by health officials for contact tracing or additional information.  If your child will require the “Test to Stay” process to attend school, you will get individualized communication from GLPS about that.  If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please fill out the COVID-19 Reporting Form and keep your child home from school. Here is the link to our COVID-19 reporting form:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdQdmsi0kIt2hX6jcIya0JGZbIEmfPhoMltQXfGkfrhv6bIPQ/viewform.  For more information regarding the aforementioned information around Covid protocols and information, then please click here: https://www.glcomets.net/coronavirus/

Hayes/Beagle Joint PTO:  Just a friendly reminder that PTO meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 6pm via Zoom, and there will be a PTO meeting on Wednesday, February 2nd. We welcome and encourage Beagle parents to attend our PTO meetings.  Here is the recurring Zoom link for future PTO meetings: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82744686994

Students Observing After-School Sports: It is extremely encouraging to see several of our students supporting our girls’ basketball team during their games on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  We greatly appreciate their support and sportsmanship from the student section.  This week during announcements we have been reminding students that if they want to observe after school sporting events, they need to go home first and come back up to the school as we cannot provide supervision for them after school until the game begins.  We appreciate you echoing that at home as well.

Dave and Eric
