February 4, 2022

Dear Beagle Middle School Parents,

Despite all of the snow days this week, here are some updates we wanted to share with you:

Winter NWEA: The majority of our students have finished winter NWEA testing in ELA; however, the snow days this week have impacted NWEA testing in Math classes.  Therefore, NWEA testing will continue in Math classes early next week. Our counseling staff will conduct make-up testing sessions the week of February 7th, focusing on ELA first followed by Math.  We are hopeful that NWEA will be complete by the end of next week.

Attention Parents of 7th Graders: It is already time to begin thinking about the 2022-23 school year at Beagle. On March 8th, students will participate in a presentation to talk about the Elective Course Request process for the 8th Grade year. Many opportunities continue to be available to your student including our award-winning Music programs, our Project Lead the Way STEM/Engineering programs as well as our stellar Visual Arts, World Language programs and competitive Athletic programs.  We will have more information with specific details in subsequent newsletters.

Attention Parents of 8th Graders: It is already time to begin thinking about the 2022-23 school year at Grand Ledge High School. On March 3rd, students will participate in a presentation to talk about the scheduling process at the High School. More information will be communicated from the High School administration regarding this process, and we will also continue to echo that information within our subsequent newsletters as well.

Spring Dance Hosted by PTO, Parent Support Needed: The PTO is excited to announce that a 7/8 grade semi-formal dance will be held on April 8th from 6-8:30 at Beagle Middle School.  Tickets will be $15 each with ticket sales beginning mid-March. If your family needs assistance to pay for the ticket or with dance attire, please let office staff know.  Any parent interested in being part of the dance committee, please join us for a meeting on February 8th at 6:00 pm at the Grand Ledge Area District Library.  We hope to see you there!

Social Media Watch: We have noticed an uptick in reports of inappropriate content that students are accessing or posting on social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. Some students are posting pictures of other students (or staff) without their consent. While the school cannot control what is posted on those sites, some posts may fall under the category of cyberbullying. Many students do not have access to social media. Thank you, parents, for holding the line! There should not be a need to access social media, or even have a smart phone at the Middle School level. If you feel that your students ARE ready for social media, and for all of the expectations and responsibilities associated with it, please regularly monitor what they are posting and what kinds of posts they are receiving from their peers.

Covid Update: Beagle continues to implement mitigation measures, and this past week Dr. Davenport and the Student Services Office provided N95 masks to all buildings for both students and staff. Students can take up to five N95 masks at this time. As you are aware, N95 masks have the highest protection/mitigation rate amongst all other masks; in addition, they can be worn up to five days. COVID-19 numbers were significantly lower this week as compared from last week. All positive cases district-wide that were on school property are recorded daily online on our COVID-19 Dashboard.  Because of the GLPS universal masking during the instructional day, most close contacts from exposures at school need only to monitor for symptoms using the GLPS COVID-19 Family Screener and to wear a mask at school (“mask to stay”).  We are required to share information with health departments, and you may be contacted by health officials for contact tracing or additional information.  If your child will require the “Test to Stay” process to attend school, you will get individualized communication from GLPS about that.  If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please fill out the COVID-19 Reporting Form and keep your child home from school. Hayes/Beagle Joint PTO:  The next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, March 7th at 6pm via Zoom. We welcome and encourage Beagle parents to attend our PTO meetings.  Here is the recurring Zoom link for future PTO meetings: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82744686994
