Dear Beagle Middle School Parents,

Here are some updates we wanted to share with you:

Comet PRIDE and School-Wide PBIS: Next week, students will engage in a PBIS refresher lesson on integrity during Check and Connect class; in addition, the next “Blue Ticket” drawing will be on Friday, February 25th in Check and Connect class as well.  We thank our PBIS team for continuing to support our students and staff in maintaining a positive school climate and culture here at Beagle.

Planners: Just a friendly reminder that the use of school-issued planners is reinforced in each class, each day, and further reinforced during Check and Connect. Our continued mission during Check and Connect is to promote and reinforce positive social connections while also helping our students build strong executive functioning and organizational skills. We thank our parents for continuing to review planners with their students.  Planners can also be a communication tool between parents and teaching staff.

Cell Phones: We have received some feedback regarding whether or not a cell phone is necessary for learning purposes at school, and we wanted to take this opportunity to provide clarification on this topic.  Students do not need a cell phone for learning purposes at Beagle as we have provided all students with a chromebook.  All learning activities along with filling out contact tracing in the cafe can be completed using a chromebook.  Students may have a cell phone at school, which can be used during three specific times: before school; during lunch inside the cafe, gym, or playground; and after school.  The rest of the time students are expected to keep their cell phones off and out of sight.  If parents choose to allow their students to have social media accounts, we strongly encourage close supervision of these accounts as we deal with numerous inappropriate situations on a daily basis that begin and often continue on social media.  As school leaders accountable for the safety and wellbeing of our students, we would be remiss if we did not bring this to the attention of our parents.  We thank you for your continued support with cell phones and appropriate use.

March Parent/Teacher Conferences: At the end of next week, parents will receive an email from Mrs. Hernandez with detailed information regarding spring conferences, which will be held the second week of March.  We will also provide more detailed information in next week’s newsletter.

LCC Career Preparation Program Tour for 8th Graders: Next week, middle and high school counseling staff will be meeting with all 8th grade students during Social Studies classes to discuss the upcoming tour to LCC’s Career Preparation Program.  The tour will be on March 9th.  The purpose of this tour is to continue our mission of offering students diverse elective offerings that are career-based; this tour helps future high school students choose meaningful elective courses that are in alignment with offerings at the Career Preparation Center for students’ junior and senior years of high school. We will have more information to come in subsequent newsletters.

Attention Parents of 7th Graders: It is already time to begin thinking about the 2022-23 school year at Beagle. On March 8th, students will participate in a presentation to talk about the Elective Course Request process for the 8th Grade year. Many opportunities continue to be available to your student including our award-winning Music programs, our Project Lead the Way STEM/Engineering programs as well as our stellar Visual Arts, World Language programs and competitive Athletic programs.  We will have more information with specific details in subsequent newsletters.

Attention Parents of 8th Graders: It is already time to begin thinking about the 2022-23 school year at Grand Ledge High School. On March 3rd, students will participate in a presentation to talk about the scheduling process at the High School. More information will be communicated from the High School administration regarding this process, and we will also continue to echo that information within our subsequent newsletters as well.

Spring Dance Hosted by PTO, Parent Support Needed: The PTO is excited to announce that a 7/8 grade semi-formal dance will be held on April 8th from 6-8:30 at Beagle Middle School.  Tickets will be $15 each with ticket sales beginning mid-March. If your family needs assistance to pay for the ticket or with dance attire, please let office staff know.  Any parent interested in being part of the dance committee, please join us for the next meeting on February 16th at 6:00 pm at the Grand Ledge Area District Library.  We hope to see you there!

Hayes/Beagle Joint PTO:  The next PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, March 7th at 6pm via Zoom. We welcome and encourage Beagle parents to attend our PTO meetings.  Here is the recurring Zoom link for future PTO meetings: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82744686994

Covid Update: COVID-19 numbers this week at Beagle were the lowest they have been since returning from holiday break; in fact, numbers were lower than the months leading up to break. All positive cases district-wide that were on school property are recorded daily online on our COVID-19 Dashboard.  Because of the GLPS universal masking during the instructional day, most close contacts from exposures at school need only to monitor for symptoms using the GLPS COVID-19 Family Screener and to wear a mask at school (“mask to stay”).  We are required to share information with health departments, and you may be contacted by health officials for contact tracing or additional information.  If your child will require the “Test to Stay” process to attend school, you will get individualized communication from GLPS about that.  If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please fill out the COVID-19 Reporting Form and keep your child home from school. Here is the link to our COVID-19 reporting form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdQdmsi0kIt2hX6jcIya0JGZbIEmfPhoMltQXfGkfrhv6bIPQ/viewform.  For more information regarding the aforementioned information around Covid protocols and information, then please click here: https://www.glcomets.net/coronavirus/.

Students’ of the Week, Extra Curricular, and Community Resources:  Due to the snow day last week in addition to today’s snow day, Students’ of the Week for the past two weeks along with next week’s selected students will be celebrated on Friday, February 18th.  Our website will be updated later next week with the names of the students honored across the aforementioned timeframe. To review additional community/extra curricular information on our webpage, then please click https://www.glcomets.net/ourschools/beagle-middle-school/, and then click on the appropriate link on our homepage.

These are all the updates that we have for now.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Take care,

Dave and Eric
