Michigan Merit Curriculum

The Michigan Merit Curriculum is the result of an extraordinary partnership between Executive Branch, State Board of Education, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Legislature and numerous education associations. MCL  380.1278a, MCL 380.1278b

The Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) is crafted around the philosophical belief that all students will need postsecondary learning oppourtunities beyond high school.  It is not a curriculum in the traditional sense in that it doesn't describe instructional material and approaches.  Instead it specifies that all students who earn a diploma, at a minimum, have demonstrated proficiency with the content outlined by the state academic standards or guidlines.  since districts are responsible for awarding diplomas so too are they responsible for providing all students the opportunity to learn the content outlined by standards.  As the learning skills for college and the workplace have merged, the MMC, if properly implemented, will prepare students with skills and knowledge needed to be successful in our global economy and workplace.

Physical Education Waiver

MMC Physical Education

Michigan Merit Curriculum states that one credit that includes both physical education AND health must be earned by high school students for graduation.  The requirement could be met in 2 separate courses each earning 1/2 credits.  The 1/2 credit for PE may also be awarded by the school district or public school academy for approved participation in extracurricular athletics or other extracurricular activities involving physical activity.  Please note, however, that this pertains only to the physical education credit guidelines of MMC, not the health education credit guideline.

A district may determine what extracurricular activities involving physical activity may be used as credit toward a physical education requirement.  The department strongly recommends the local school board develop its own policy outlining what is acceptable for the credit as to be clear to students and parents and consistent in implementation.

GLHS requires that a student will complete a varsity sport or marching band and be on the list before the beginning of the school year of the request.

TEST OUT POLICY

Grand Ledge High School offers students a testing out process once a year over the summer months.  Students may choose to test out of an MMC required course to further their scheduling options throughout their years of high school.  Students must exhibit mastery of the course content by attaining a grade of at least 80% or B- on a comprehensive final assessment/paper/lab as required for individual courses.  Credits earned through the test out process will count towards graduation.


APPLICATION PROCESS

Review all of the information regarding the test out process before completing the online application.

Step 1:   

Review the High School Coursebook and make a note of the course(s) you wish to test out.

Step 2: 

Look up the Test Out information on the applicable websites. Many materials are available online and do not require extra materials.  If no online materials are listed, see Step 3.

Step 3:  

Look to see if the course(s) requires extra materials.  Some courses have digital textbooks available for free. If other materials are required (such as novels, labs, etc) you need to submit a $50 deposit for those materials.  Payment can be made either by cash, or check payable to Grand Ledge Public Schools.  Submit all deposits to Mrs. Ashley in the HS Main Office.  Deposits must be paid before non-online materials will be distributed, and will be refunded when materials are returned.  Materials will be available for pick up in the GLHS Media Center from Tuesday, May 29th through Tuesday, June 5th.   You must have the deposit receipt showing you paid in order to pick up materials. 

The Main Office is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.  The Media Center is open Monday through Thursday, from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and on Fridays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Step 4:

Make a note of the test out dates and times. You do not need to reserve a test time; select the one that best fits into your schedule and show up!  All tests will be administered in the High School Cafeteria.  If you are planning on testing out of more than one course, please plan to take them at different times.

Step 5:   

Complete the online Test Out Application for EACH course that you want to test out by Friday, May 25, 2018.

Step 6:

Effective April 1, 2006, Public Act 160 and Public Act 258 of 2000, created the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act, commonly referred to as dual enrollment.  This law directs school districts to assist students in paying tuition and fees for courses at Michigan public or private colleges or universities.  The following are some of the eligibility guidelines/standards:

Students in grades 9 through 12 may take up to ten postsecondary courses.

  • If 9th grader - 2 in first 3 years, 4 in senior year
  • If 10th grade - 2 in first year, 4 in years 2 and 3
  • If 11th or 12 grader- not more than 6 per year

 Students can qualify for dual enrollment by:

  • Taking one of the following assessments:  PSAT, PLAN, EXPLORE ACT, SAT, OR MME. Click here for assessment score.  The college may require additional requirements.
  • Students must be enrolled in both the eligible school (public or private) and eligible postsecondary institution during the local school’s regular academic year and must be enrolled in at least one high school class.
  • The college courses cannot be a hobby, craft, or recreation course, or in the subject areas of physical education, theology, divinity, or religious education.
  • School districts are required to pay an amount equal to the prorated percentage of the statewide pupil-weighted average foundation allowance, based on the proportion of the school year that the eligible students attends the eligible institution for enrollment in the course.  Eligible charges do not include transportation or parking costs or activity fees. Students who fail or do not complete a course can be required to pay the costs of the course.
  • 50% of the course must fall within the school district’s academic year.

Additional requirements that Grand Ledge High school requires for enrollment.

  • Student in good standing, attendance, academics and behavior.
  • Student meets the Dual enrollment Qualifying scores.
  • Student will meet with their counselor to review all requirements.
  • Students are not to loiter on school property during the scheduled dual enrollment course.
  • If selecting a night class please be aware of the safety factors.
  • For more information please contact your counselor or the college you plan on enrolling in.
  • Central office will need a receipt before any refunds will be distributed.

Please fill out the forms below required by the institution and for GLHS for Postsecondary enrollment.

  1. Grand Ledge Dual Enrollment Agreement form - Please print documents to review and sign.
  2. MSU Forms - This will take you to the MSU website.  Please review the steps necessary to start your enrollment.  You will need to print the following documents: Approval form, Billing Form and print the list of classes you have registered.
  3. LCC Forms -  Review the steps below for applying as a LCC dual enrollment student. You will need to print the following documents: Approval form, Billing Form and print the list of classes you have registered for.  
  1. Complete and submit a Lansing Community College admission application (first semester of attendance only).
  2. Complete and submit a Dual Enrollment Approval Form: 16 or 17 Year Old. If home schooled complete the Home School Approval Form: 16 or 17 Year Old. High school students who are 18 at the start of the semester are not required to provide a Dual Enrollment Approval Form. A completed approval form must be submitted for each semester of enrollment prior to registering for classes. Approval for multiple semesters up to an entire academic year (fall, spring, and summer) may be provided on one form by indicating all three semesters on the form. The form must be the correct form for the student's status for all of the semesters indicated.
  3. Submit the Approval Form to the LCC Registrar's Office prior to registering for class(es). The form may be submitted by email, U.S. mail or in person at the StarZone in the Gannon Building (addresses are provided on the form). Allow a minimum of 3 business days for processing. Incomplete or incorrectly completed forms may take longer.
  4. Establish Reading, Writing and Math levels by taking the LCC placement testsNote: ACT score reports with scores of 18 or above in English and Reading, scores of 22 or above in Math are considered college ready and may be substituted for Reading, Writing and Math assessment test scores. SAT Verbal/Critical Reading scores of 430 or above may also be substituted for Reading and Writing assessment test scores. Official score reports may be submitted to the Registrar's Office via email, U.S. mail or in person at the StarZone in the Gannon Building. Allow a minimum of 3 business days for processing.
  5. Register online for classes. Need help?  Print a list of registered courses. 
  6. If the student's high school is to be billed for the courses taken, a Dual Enrollee Billing Authorization or Non-Public Dual Enrollee Billing Information Form must be on file prior to the student's payment due date. Billing forms must be submitted every semester of dual enrollment. If the high school is only paying a portion of the total bill, the student must pay the remaining balance before registering for classes for a subsequent semester or by the end of the semester for which they are being billed.

Important dates for current students enrolled in an AP course

 

January 30, 2018 and January 31, 2018 

  • The AP testing information sessions will be in the cafeteria on Tuesday 1/30/18 at the beginning of second hour 9:12am and Wednesday 1/31/18 at the beginning of 5th hour at 1:35pm.
  • AP students must attend one of these sessions.
  • If students are ill or absent there will be make up session in the media center on Friday Feb 2, 2018 at 11:00am. 

April 17th 2018 - AP REGISTRATION (bubbling your demographics) 

  • During second hour 9:12am and April 18th from 1:35pm in the cafeteria. 
  • It will take about 50 minutes.

May 7, 2018 - May 18, 2017

  • AP Tests will be held at the Sawdon Building.
  • Students need to report 20 minutes before the exam date.

Career Preparation Center

Eaton RESA Career Preparation Center

Career Prep Center offers programs for high school juniors and seniors taught by college instructors on the college campus or in a business/industry setting (Davenport University, Lansing Community College, AIS Construction, Olivet College at Farm Bureau, and Potter Park Zoo).

Students attend either the morning or afternoon half of their school day for the entire year. Transportation is provided to and from their high school. Daily Schedule


AM CPC Students: Buses leave Grand Ledge High School at 6:45 am and return at 10:05 am. Students will
then attend 3rd, 4th, and 5th hour.


PM CPC Students: Students will attend 1st, 2nd, and a virtual 3 rd hour. Buses leave GLHS at 11:30 am and return at 2:40 pm.


Transportation Information
Students may ride the bus or drive to any class location except Davenport University (DU students must
ride the bus from either GLHS or LCC West. They cannot park on DU campus). Students may also drive

The Early College at LCC

The Early College is a collaboration between Ingham Intermediate School District (ISD) and Lansing Community College (LCC). The Early College is a program for students entering their junior year of high school that are looking for an opportunity to move into a college environment.

The Early College at LCC offers up to 60 college credits, tuition free, for students in participating high schools who will be starting their junior year of high school. Enrolled students will attend class on LCC's main campus for grades 11-13 and will no longer attend their high school.

Students are expected to complete the program in three years. After three years, they will have earned their high school diploma and up to sixty college credits, tuition free. Eaton RESA CRT Early Middle College Program


The Capital Region Technical Early Middle College (CRTEMC)  program is a public early middle college program for capable and self-motivated students operated as an extension of the Eaton RESA Career Preparation Center. It is available to any Eaton, Ingham, or Clinton county student that has applied during their sophomore year and has been accepted into the Career Preparation Center. It is a unique opportunity for students to explore and earn an associate's degree, credential or transferable credit in a Career and Technical Education pathway while in high school with all tuition, books, and associated fees covered at no cost to students or families through the RESA and a school district's State Aid foundation grant. 


Students will begin blending their high school course work with college level coursework in 11th grade, adding additional college courses in 12th and complete a full schedule of college coursework in a 13th year. With an emphasis on the completion of two years of college, students are afforded the opportunity to experience a 21st century education through innovative hands-on education and professional experiences. 


This opportunity mandates a three-year commitment and students must be committed to a non-traditional high school schedule and understand the increased academic rigor required to perform successfully at the college level. For more information, contact Dawn Anderson: danderson@eatonresa.org

Work-based Learning (Co-op)

In order to work as a co-op student, the basic guidelines are:

  • You MUST be a junior or senior on track for graduation.
  • You MUST have excellent school attendance and lack of tardies.
  • You MUST have previously completed a CTE course at GLHS or the Career Prep Center.
  • You MUST have an up-to-date EDP on file.
  • The position MUST relate to the CTE course AND the career pathway listed on your EDP.

 

Grand Ledge High School courses that fit co-op criteria:

  • Marketing
  • Accounting
  • Intro to Business
  • Drafting
  • Parent/Child Development
  • Any Career Prep Center class

The position and workplace must meet the following criteria:

  • The workplace MUST have Worker's Disability Compesation, General Liability Insurance, and take out taxes from your pay (for paid positions).
  • The position needs to professional in nature and follow all labor laws
  • PAID co-op:
    • If you take two classes off per school day, you must average 15 hours per week.
    • If you take one class off per school day, you must average 10 hours per week.
    • Your working hours must be during the classes you take off from school at least 3 days per week.   
  • UNPAID co-op:
    • You MUST be working during your co-op scheduled class(es) every school day.
    • Your work responsibilities must rotate every 45 hours.
